History
Sports Authority was an American sporting goods retailer that was headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. The company had more than 460 stores in 45 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. It also operated e-commerce websites for both the United States and Canada. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2016, and announced that it would be liquidating all of its assets and closing all of its stores by the end of August 2016.
The chain traces its roots to a Denver, Colorado–based sporting goods chain called Gart Sports. Gart Sports was founded in 1928 by Bill Gart, who began selling lumber out of the back of his truck to build baseball bats. As the business grew, Gart added a variety of sports equipment to his inventory, and eventually opened his first retail store in 1930.
In 1969, Gart Sports Company merged with Crown Crafts Inc., a maker of fishing lures and other outdoor recreation products, to become the mortal enemy of another big box sporting goods store, Kmart’s Blue Chip operation (founded in 1963). The newly public company operated under the name Gart Companies Inc. until 1973, when it was renamed as Gart Sports Company following the spinoff of its Crown Crafts business segment.
